KEY DEFINITIONS

Contact Points: Delivers the safe Static Correction.
Sensor Probe: Detects the vibrations of your dog’s barking. Note: The Sensor Probe is not adjustable.
Low Battery Indicator: The Indicator light flashes to indicate the battery is low.

FIT THE BARK CONTROL COLLAR

Important: The proper fit and placement of your Bark Control Collar are essential for successful training. The Contact Points must always have direct contact with your dog’s skin on the neck.

To assure a proper fit, please follow these steps:
1. Make sure that no battery is installed in the Bark Control Collar.
2. Let your dog stand comfortably.
3. Place the Bark Control Collar high on your dog’s neck close to the ears. Center the Contact Points underneath your dog’s neck, making sure it touches the skin.

Note: It may be necessary to trim the hair around the Contact Points to ensure contact.

4. The distance between the Contact Points and your dog’s neck should at least be 1finger. The fit should be snug but not c.
5. Allow your dog to wear the Bark Control Collar for several minutes and then recheck the fit. Adjust the collar to your dog’s comfortable fit. Again allow the dog to be comfortable and check the fit again.
6. Trim the collar as follows:
a. Mark the desired length of the Bark Control Collar with a pen. Give a little allowance especially if your dog is young or if it grows a thick winter coat.
b. Remove the Bark Control Collar from your dog and cut off the excess strap.
c. Before putting the Bark Control Collar back onto your dog, seal the frayed edges of the cut collar running it over a candle flame.

Important: To ensure product comfort, safety, and effectiveness; the following should be observed:

  • Always check the fit by being maintaining the one-finger distance between the Contact Point and your pet’s skin. We do not want it to be too tight or too loose.
  • Your dog’s neck should be checked daily for any sign of a rash or sore.
  • If a rash or sore is observed, discontinue the use of the Bark Control Collar for a few days.
  • If the condition does not improve in spite of discontinued use of the collar; or if the condition is still observed and is already beyond 48 hours, see your veterinarian.
  • Your pet’s neck and the Contact Points must be washed at least once a week with a washcloth and mild hand soap. Make sure to rinse thoroughly after each washing.

A condition called Pressure Necrosis, which is characterized by a strain or sore caused by compression and prolonged contact may occur if the measures above are not religiously observed.

TO INSERT AND REMOVE THE BATTERY

Note: NEVER install the battery while the Bark Control Collar is on your dog.

This Bark Control Collar uses a replaceable PetSafe® battery (RFA-67). This unique battery is designed to make battery replacement easier. It also increases water protection.

To insert the battery, align the symbols on the battery (arrow) and Bark Control Collar (triangle). Use a large coin to turn the battery clockwise until the arrow is aligned with the lock symbol on the housing.

To remove the battery, simply turn the battery counter-clockwise using a large coin. NEVER attempt to cut into or pry open the battery. Be sure to dispose of used batteries properly.

BATTERY LIFE

The average battery life is 3 to 6 months. It will depend solely on how often your dog barks. It may be observed that the battery you use during training may run out faster compared to replacement batteries. This is because dogs tend to bark more during the initial stage of training and will normally minimize barking later on.

LOW BATTERY INDICATOR

The Low Battery Indicator light will be on to notify you that it is time to change the battery.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING USE OF THE BARK COLLAR

Important: Do not leave your dog alone in the first few days of Training.

Place the Bark Control Collar properly on your dog and stay close by. Most dogs will understand quickly that the Bark Control Collar is doing something to them when they bark; so in response; dogs normally relax and stop barking. And because Static Correction from the Bark Control Collar may be surprising or startling at first, some dogs may bark more at the initial correction. There is always an adjustment stage.

A rare scenario may also occur where a dog may go into a bark-correction-bark-correction cycle especially in the initial phase. If this happens, make sure to help your dog calm down. As your dog relaxes, he will understand that if he becomes quiet, he will not receive Static Corrections. Again; this is very rare.

Usually; a reduction in your dog’s barking is noticed within the first couple of days of use. At this point, it is important to remember the learning process should be complete. Dogs may “test” this new learning experience and will increase their attempts to bark. This usually occurs during the second week. If this does occur, remain consistent and do not discontinue the use of the collar. Your dog must get used to using the collar all the time. Removing the collar every now and then may affect training success.

REGULAR MAINTENANCE

• Contact Points tightness should be checked weekly
Note: Do not adjust the factory preset Sensor Probe.

• Clean Contact Points with alcohol weekly
Note: Remove the battery and discharge the Bark Control Collar before touching the Contact Points.

• Check your dog’s neck for irritation and wash the neck weekly.

TESTING THE BARK CONTROL COLLAR

Slide the Sensor Probe across a rough surface that is at least 10 inches. The Bark Control Collar should beep. If your Bark Control Collar doesn’t beep during this test, see “The Bark Control Collar does not beep” in the “Troubleshooting” section, and continue with step 2.

TROUBLESHOOTING

The Bark Control Collar is not beeping.

• Test the Bark Control Collar (see “Testing the Bark Control Collar”).
• If your Bark Control Collar still does not beep during this test, do the same test but now on a rougher surface.
• Check to see if the battery is properly installed.
• Replace the battery.
• If the Bark Control Collar is still not beeping, contact Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677.

My Bark Control Collar beeps, but my dog is still barking (dog is not responding to the Static Correction).

• Tighten the Bark Control Collar and trim your dog’s hair where the Contact Points touch his neck.
• Replace battery.
• If your dog is still not responding, contact the Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677.

The Bark Control Collar Indicator Light is flashing.

• Replace battery

TO DISCHARGE THE BARK CONTROL COLLAR

Important: Avoid touching the Contact Points and Sensor Probe unless the Bark Control Collar is completely discharged.

After battery removal, the Bark Control Collar retains some stored energy and may still activate around 2 or 3 times. To fully discharge the Bark Control Collar, slide the Sensor Probe across a table or hard surface several times until the Bark Control Collar stops beeping.

The battery normally stays charged for several months of use. Recharging varies on the frequency of use and of dog’s barking behavior.

CHOOSING CONTACT POSTS

Select the Contact Posts that provide the best skin contact.

  • Short posts work well with short-haired dogs.
  • Long posts work best with long hair or thick-coated dogs.

Screw the posts securely into the Bark Collar. Always check that the posts are tightly screwed on the collar.

TURNING THE BARK COLLAR ‘ON’

To turn “ON” the Bark Collar, rotate the dial clockwise from ‘0’ (off) to your desired setting. This can be done using your fingers or with a coin.
Each time the unit is turned ‘on’ and each time the setting is changed, the Bark Collar vibrates briefly and the status light will illuminate. This is an auto ‘self-test’ to confirm the Bark Collar is working.

THE BARK COLLAR SETTINGS

The Bark Collar has 7 settings.
Vibration Setting and Settings 1-5:
The intensity of the vibration or stimulation for each level gradually increases as the dog barks.
After 3 minutes of no barking, the Bark Collar automatically resets to the lowest intensity for that setting.

Progressive Setting
‘P’ Setting begins with vibration only and then automatically changes to progressive stimulation (from Low to High) if the dog continues to bark. The Bark Collar automatically resets to vibration after 3 minutes of no barking.

SETTINGS
O ‘off’
V Vibration only
1 Low
2 Medium Low
3 Medium
4 Medium-High
5 High
P Progressive

FITTING THE BARK COLLAR

Make sure that the setting is in the off (‘0’) position when fitting the bark collar.

For the product to be effective, the collar should be properly fitted.

  • The collar strap should be directly behind your dog’s ears.
  • The collar should have a snug fit. The contact posts should be able to detect the dog’s bark and should be able to send the vibration. Contact posts must always touch the dog’s skin.

The Bark Collar should be positioned at the center just below the dog’s chin. If the collar is too loose, or if the collar is placed away from the center of the neck, the bark may not be detected and the dog may not feel the vibration or stimulation at all.

FINDING THE APPROPRIATE SETTING

1. Turn Bark Collar “on” and set it to the lowest setting - either Vibration (‘V’) or Low (‘1’).
2. Put the collar on the dog’s neck (page 7).
3. To determine the appropriate setting that fits your dog, you need to observe your dog’s barking activity. When your dog barks, look out for some response from the dog such as a head shake, ear twitch, change of expression and be keen on any change in the pattern of barking.
The sensation felt from the collar should be just enough to distract the dog from barking.

IMPORTANT

  • There is a brief moment ‘bark forgiveness’ which delays the collar activation, so you can expect that the response of the dog will not be immediate.
  • The vibration or stimulation gradually increases (for each setting) as the dog continues to bark
  • The response should only be subtle and not very obvious.

4. If you do not notice any response from the dog after several minutes of using the collar, change the setting to one level higher.
5. Allow your dog to bark again with a new and higher setting. Keep an eye on his response, the way you did with the first level. Repeat step until you observe that the dog is responsive to the correction felt.
INCREASE THE SETTING ONLY one level at a time.

USING THE BARK COLLAR

Once you have already found the appropriate setting, keep the Bark Collar on during the day or whenever you feel the dog is most likely to be barking excessively.
We recommend removing the Bark Collar at night (or for at least several hours daily) to prevent skin irritation and to allow the dog to rest.

Give your dog time to associate the vibration or stimulation with his/her barking.

When the Bark Collar is properly set; most dogs will eventually figure out that the sensation/vibration is relative to his barking and he will soon realize that it stops when the barking stops as well. Some dogs learn this quickly; while others take some time.

If your dog’s barking does not improve after a while; you need to adjust the settings to a level higher.

If after a reasonable period with the collar the dog still continues to bark excessively; then the setting might be too low for your dog. You need to increase the setting to one level higher.

Warning
This product is not intended for dogs with a history of aggressive behavior. If in doubt, consult a qualified professional before using this product.

THE BARK-COUNTER

The Bark Counter is a feature that provides information on how often the collar was activated. This helps you track your dog’s progress especially if you were out for the day.
To view the Bark Counter, Look at the led Status Light when you turn the Bark Collar “off”.

To View the Bark-Counter

  • Turn the settings to ‘off’ position. Watch the LED Status Light as you turn the Bark Collar “off”.
  • As you turn ‘off’ the Bark Collar, the led Status Light will flash if it was since the last time you turned it ‘on’,
  • The number of flashes represents the number activations as described below.

2 Flashes

1-5 Activations

3 Flashes

6-10 Activations

4 Flashes

11-15 Activations

5 Flashes

15+ Activations

  • Turning ‘off’ the Bark Collar automatically resets the Bark-Counter.

If the collar always indicates that it has been activated for a number of times (for the time period monitored), you probably need to adjust the Bark Collar setting one level higher.

TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS

If the Bark Collar does not seem to be working or it does not show any sign of progress or improvement:

  • Check that the collar is turned on. Once the device is on, the LED Status Light should flash green.
  • Be sure that the battery is charged.
  • Make sure that the charger is properly plugged when charging.

If your dog is not responding to the Bark Collar or if the dog still barks even while Bark Collar is on:

  • Make sure the collar fits well on your dog. (see: Fitting The Bark Collar, Pg. 7)
  • Tighten the collar strap if it is loose.
  • Adjust the position of the Bark Collar; it should be on the center of the dog’s neck.
  • Make sure the contact points should touch your dog’s neck.
  • Increase the Bark Collar settings. (see: Finding Appropriate Setting, Pg. 8)
